After amusing the audiences with inexplicable dose of laughter for about twelve fantastic seasons, the most watched sitcom on television, The Big Bang Theory is nearing its end and the fans cannot take this news lightly. After creating a huge fan base internationally over a decade, the makers are finally calling it quits and it is an emotional moment for the whole team.

On Wednesday, Warner Bros. TV, CBS and Chuck Lorre Productions issued a joint statement, in which they said that the Number One Comedy in the world will be ending its successful run in May 2019. The multicamera longest running series, will come to a close with record 279 episodes. The houses also expressed their gratefulness for their fans for their constant support. They added that the makers along with the cast, crew and writers were much appreciative of the success that the show has seen and together they aim to deliver the series’ finale that will bring the show to an ‘epic, creative close’.

In 2017, when the renewal contract of two-years was being made, it was presumed that the sitcom’s final chapter can be expected.  However, CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl at the Summer TV Press Tour this month spoke to the reporters and told them that it would not be the final season and that they were having preliminary discussions about the renewal with Warner Bros. Studio that produces the show. After showing this belief it was surprising that the show was declared to be concluding. The discussions seem to have not worked out. Nevertheless, twelve season is a huge time span for any show and the good thing was that The Big Bang Theory was one of the rare shows that was among the top on ratings consistently.

After the official declaration of the final season, another reports emerged that it was Jim Parsons, the main lead who played Sheldon Cooper, who turned down a massive pay offer of about $50 million to appear as a socially challenged scientist, a role that made him a beloved character of a million viewers. Parsons posted a heartfelt message on Thursday on Instagram with the main cast and a long caption, but did not address any of the rumours that are doing the rounds. Meanwhile his co-star Kunal Nayyar talked to Entertainment Tonight on Thursday and said that the cast is like a family after working together for so many years and that, they have nothing but lots of love and support for each other.

The geeky comical story of The Big Bang Theory revolves around seven people residing in Pasadena, California. The characters Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter (John Mark Galecki) are physicists and share an apartment; Penny (Kaley Cuoco), a waitress and an aspiring actress, who is an across-the-hall neighbour of the physicists. Then there are co-workers and socially awkward friends named Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), both aerospace engineers and astrophysicists respectively. Some of the supporting characters that gained the main roles over time are neuroscientist and love interest of Sheldon Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), microbiologist Bernadette Rostenkowski (Melissa Rauch) and another physicist Leslie Winkle (Sara Gilbert). Leslie left the show in the third season and returned in the 200th episode in the ninth season for a special appearance.

Parsons has four Emmys and a Golden Globe in his kitty for playing the role of Sheldon excellently. Back in 2014, the original main cast is said to have started earning $1 million per episode. This was the time when the show became a great hit and reached the peak of its acclamation. Again, the five actors reportedly took a $100,000 pay cut for each episode in seasons 11 and 12 in order to support a pay hike for co-stars Mayim and Melissa.

The last season of the Big Bang Theory catapulted it to the No.1 spot on broadcast television and brought an average of about 19 million religious viewers weekly. First premiered on CBS in 2017, the popular series ranked as TVs top sitcom till the 2017-18 season, after which Roseanne reboot took over and nudged the comedy to the second spot.  Although the show managed to earn 52 Emmy nominations and 10 wins during its long run, it could never bag the award for being an outstanding comedy series. Moreover, the Critics never completely approved of the show’s popularity and for them the show’s demise comes as a great relief. As per some of the critical reviews, watching the show inflicted mundane and monotonous experience with the characters clinging to a track carved for each that extends unreasonably every season.
