Android XR a new OS for smart glasses and headsets launched

Google, in collaboration with the top mobile manufacturing company, Samsung and mobile chip company Qualcomm announced its new Android XR for smart glasses and headsets. The Android XR is a new OS from Google based on its Android operating system, which will power future smart glasses and headsets. 

Android XR based smart glasses and headsets will complete with the Apple Vision Pro headset. According to Google, Android XR based  smart glasses and headsets will arrive in 2025. This operating system will help Samsung in building virtual reality (VR) headsets.  

According to the official statements Samsung is already working on a new headset under the  Project Moohan. This will be the first device to be powered with the new Android XR operating system. The  Android XR is still not available in the market but as per google this is released to the developers with the tools like ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR.

Developers will be able to build and test their application using the tools such as ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR. These tools provide the apps and capabilities to build apps for future Android XR-powered devices. So, it's a good time for the developers to update their applications for future new Android XR based smart glasses and headsets.

According to Google, Android XR is an AI-powered operating system based on the Google Android system which is going to soon come to the next generation headsets and glasses. Android XR operating system brings digital information and the real world together to help in daily life by providing innovative options to watch, work and explore.

"This mixed reality device features state-of-the-art displays, support for hand, eye and voice input and was designed to be comfortable with balanced weight distribution," Qualcomm wrote in a blog post.

Google has also started tweaking its existing apps and various services such as Google Gemini, YouTube, Google TV, Google Photos, Chrome and Google Maps to use the full feature of Android XR-powered devices. These changes will bring next generation experience to the users of the new breed of smart glasses and headsets launched.

All these new innovations will enable the users to be  'able to explore the world in new ways with Google Maps' and multitask in multiple virtual screens. Users will be able to use gestures for finding information on topics they are interested in via Circle to Search.

According to Google, Android XR will come to Android XR-powered smart glasses and headsets in 2025. The company has confirmed that mobile and tablet apps from Google Pay will also work out of the box on the devices powered on Android XR  operating system.

Google has confirmed that Samsung is working on a new headset under Project Moohan, which will bring the first  Android XR powered device. Qualcomm has confirmed to provide the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 system-on-chip (SoC) for these devices.

Samsung Moohan Android XR Headset will give head to head competition to the Apple Vision Pro with its Samsung's XR glasses. Samsung's XR glasses will arrive powered with Android XR operating system. The smartglass will use Google’s Gemini AI assistant and provide Circle to Search. All these will make this highly usable device for the users. 

There is no information about the pricing of these new smart glasses and headsets.
