New Delhi: JNU student Umar Khalid, who was in 2016 arrested on charges of sedition, is attacked at the Constitution Club near Parliament today. Even though he escapes unhurt, the police have confirmed that as per complaint an unknown person attacked him from behind and tried to fire.

The student leader was in the Constitution Club to attend a programme titled 'Khauff Se Azaadi,'organised by an organisationnamed 'United Against Hate'.

Delhi Police DCP Madhur Verma says, ‘Umar Khalid’s claim isbeing verified. Somebody pounced on him and pushed, thereafter he tried to fire at Khalid. According to Khalid the attacker fired in the air and was chased by people.' He also mentioned that the CCTV footage will also be looked at.

Ironically, the talk was supposed to address ‘fear of getting lynched, getting raped, killed, kidnapped, molested, and getting discriminated.’ Several speakers were invited to talk on the issues and how we must fight this fear to have a society full of love and peace.

Khaled later speaking to media says,‘it’s ironic but not surprising … there is an atmosphere of fear in the country and it is an attempt by certain section to silence anti-government voices.’

He further added: “I was very scared at that moment when he pointed that gun at me. That moment I was being reminded of what happened to Gauri Lankesh. I thought that moment has arrived. I am very thankful for my friends who overpowered him, and my life was saved.”

Former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah in a tweet says, “wage a motivated hate campaign against individuals & sooner or later someone will feel emboldened enough to take the law in to their own hands. The attack on UmarKhalid is the direct result of the relentless hate campaign using both social & mainstream media. Glad he’s well.”

Meanwhile, a section of people is claiming that there was a firing at a tea stall near the Constitution Club, but Khaled was not present when the incident took place. Social media is buzzed with mixed reactions; however, the Delhi Police is yet to verify the incident and if there was any firing near the prominentplace of Delhi then it’s a big question on the security situation in Delhi.
