Akshay Kumar seems unstoppable since he started signing a host of movies that are focussed on national issues or on patriotism. His latest flick Gold is doing pretty well and has already earned 88.9 crore in the initial ten days. The major advantage of the movie was that it was a sports drama with national fervour and its time of releasing, i.e. Independence Day.

The movie opened with Rs. 25.25 crore earning on its first day, i.e. Wednesday and recorded the third highest opening of the year after Sanju and Race 3. Then on subsequent days it managed to mint Rs. 8.10 crore, Rs. 10.10 crore, Rs. 12.30 crore, Rs. 15.55 crore, Rs. 3.75 crore, Rs. 4.50 crore, Rs. 6 crore and Rs. 3.6 crore, as per estimation. Although the film saw a dip in the present week and could do very well on weekends, it is expected Another movie that clashed with the release of Gold is Satyamev Jayate and is also doing very well at the Box office and has made about 75.09 crore in nine days. According to Bollywood Hungama, the total worldwide gross earning of Gold stands at 115.40 crore.

The story of Gold is mainly fictional yet inspired by the story of former captain of Indian Hockey team Kishan Lal and the real events that unfolded around him in India between 1933 and 1948.  Kishan Lal was the greatest inside forwards and one of the fastest wingers that Indian Hockey had seen.  The Padma Shri winner also proved to be an ace mentor who took Indian Railways Hockey Team to the top and trained many other teams. Akshay essays the role of Junior Manager Tapan Das, who very much like finds a team not very promising, as its best players had moved to Pakistan after partition.

With a wholly inexperienced team India went to participate in the 1948 London Olympics. And they emerged as dark horses, who to everyone’s surprise went on the defeat the Great Britain at their home turf with a score of 4-0 and bagged first Gold of independent India like Kishan Lal. Mouni Roy (playing Tapan’s wife Monobina), famous TV star who debuts on Silver Screen with this movie along with Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Kumar Singh and Amit Sadh constitute the main cast of the movie and that might have worked in favour of the movie too.
It remains to be seen whether the magic of Gold can work on the movie lovers this weekend.
